IELTS Reading Matching Practice - New Passage

Reading: Matching

Paragraph A: The Industrial Revolution marked a major turning point in history; almost every aspect of daily life was influenced in some way. Most notably, average income and population began to exhibit unprecedented sustained growth. In the two centuries following 1800, the world's average per capita income increased over tenfold, while the world's population increased more than sixfold.

Paragraph B: One of the key drivers of the Industrial Revolution was the development of the steam engine. This invention allowed for mechanized production processes that dramatically increased productivity and efficiency across various industries, most notably in textiles, where it led to mass production.

Paragraph C: The revolution also had profound social effects. It led to the rise of urbanization as people moved from rural areas to cities in search of work. This migration resulted in overcrowded living conditions and poor sanitation, leading to public health issues that were previously unknown on such a scale.

Paragraph D: Another significant impact of the Industrial Revolution was its effect on transportation. Innovations such as railways and steamships made travel faster and cheaper, facilitating trade and communication between distant regions. This connectedness contributed to globalization, which has continued to evolve into the modern era.

Paragraph E: Despite its benefits, the Industrial Revolution also brought about labor challenges. Workers faced long hours, low pay, and unsafe working conditions. These hardships eventually spurred the formation of labor unions and movements advocating for workers' rights, leading to reforms that improved working conditions over time.

Paragraph F: Finally, the environmental impact of industrialization cannot be overlooked. The increased use of fossil fuels like coal and oil led to pollution and environmental degradation, issues that continue to pose challenges today. Efforts to mitigate these impacts have become a central focus of contemporary discussions around sustainability and climate change.
